California Issues Moratorium on Homeowners Insurance Cancellations in Parts of Los Angeles and Kern Counties

On November 19, 2022, California Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency covering portions of Los Angeles and Kern Counties due to the Route Fire.

Today, California Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara ordered that, due to the Governor’s declaration, no admitted or non-admitted insurer may issue a notice of cancellation or non-renewal due to wildfire risk for one year, starting on November 19, 2022, for any policy of residential property insurance in the following ZIP Codes within the Route Fire area: 91354, 91355, 91381, 91383, 91384, 91390, 93040, 93222, 93225, 93243, and 93532.  This moratorium affects approximately 52,343 residential fire insurance policies.  If additional ZIP Codes are determined to be within or adjacent to the fire area, the Commissioner may expand the moratorium to those ZIP Codes.

The Commissioner’s Bulletin can be accessed at this link.
